Situated
among two rivers (Tejo and Zezere), Constancia was an harbour
where remarkable trade was done, when the rivers were the main
roads that linked the cities and villages, transporting people and
carrying goods and food between
them.
The
people had a strong link to the rivers, to the maritime activity
and the derived economy. Nowadays still subsists the gastronomy
from those times, like Cooked Corn Bread (migas) with Fried Fish,
Cod-fish or pork Rib-steaks, Fish Stew, the exquisite Lamprey-Rice
and Alose-Fish.
To
show their husbands the joy of welcomming them after a long period
in the boat voyages, the wifes cooked with all their love and
tenderness the Queijinhos do Céu (little cheese of the heaven) to
offer them.
The
Nuns Clarissas still prepare these and other specialities like
Ninfa do Tejo, Santa Clara cake, Montalvito, Palito Conventual
that you easily find and can taste in the O Café da Praça.
